Newcastle-under-Lyme Junior School makes a serious commitment to games and physical education for all children. PE/Games lessons are taught by Junior School staff and by specialists from the Senior School. All Pre-Prep and Prep children benefit from regular swimming lessons in the School’s own pool. There are extensive opportunities for all children to pursue their sporting interests through practices at lunchtimes and after School. We take great pride in the number of Junior School teams that compete each year in a variety of sports and other physical activities locally, regionally and nationally.

Triathlon

Several School families came together in the holidays to raise funds for the Jack Dulson Memorial Fund. Well done to Isobel, Emily, Patience, Izzy and Will who raised over £650 by participating in the Dearnsford Lake Kids Fun Triathlon. They completed a 50m swim, a 2K bike ride and a 1K run, finishing with some excellent placings, but this one was all about their friend. Well done to all!

Staffordshire County Hockey Tournament

The U11 Boys' and Girls' teams battled it out in the Staffordhire County Hockey Tournament on Friday, 28 February 2014. The girls' teams worked hard and the A team came third and the B team fourth. Sadly this meant that they did not progress to the next round. The boys' teams were also in action, with the A team excelling by winning the whole tournament! They scored 18 goals and conceded none throughout the day. A tremendous achievement by them all.

Boys' Hockey - Midlands Finals

Having been crowned recently as Staffordshire U11 Hockey Champions, the Newcastle under Lyme Junior School boys' squad represented their School and their county in the Midlands Finals. They fought hard in a tough competition against several different schools from around the Midlands. At the end of their pool games, with a win and two draws, they were equal first on points with two other schools. Sadly though, due to goal difference at this stage, they did not progress to the qualifying rounds. In the following stages the boys managed two further wins. Throughout the day the boys did not lose a single game, coming away with three wins and two draws. A fantastic effort!

Girls start their hockey season at King's Macclesfield

The A and B girls' hockey teams' first outing was in Macclesfield against the King's School. After a delay in departure the girls arrived and warmed up quickly. The B team played extremely well and were pleased to go into half time with a goalless draw, ultimately they recorded a 2-0 loss. The A team managed an impressive 5-0 win; a thoroughly deserved victory...may the goals keep flowing! A great start to the season, well done to all of the girls involved.

Junior Netball 2012-2013

The girls have had some exciting matches recently and great success. The Year 6 and Year 5 teams beat Stockport 6-0 and 6-3 and were victorious against The Grange with an 11-0, 11-1 and 6-2 result. On Sunday 7th October, the girls represented the school at the Wrekin Tournament and won all their group games. They then went on to beat Shrewsbury High School in the semi-final 8-4 and face Old Hall School in the final. The girls played wonderfully, however, they lost by one goal and were runners up in the torunament, the final score being 8-9. They were presented with second place medals and a stylish glass trophy. Congratulations girls!

Junior Cross Country

An Olympian Cross Country Season for the Juniors

Junior School pupils in Years 5 and 6 seem to have been inspired by the 2012 Games, and have enjoyed a very successful cross country season in the Newcastle Primary Schools League. Over 5 individual races, and with 16 schools entered in each, the girls' team managed to win the league with the boys' team coming a creditable third position. Special mentions must go to Grace Potts and Bella Goodwin who won individual gold and bronze medals respectively; a superb achievement over a season of races packed with 60-80 runners each week. Finally both boys and girls performed brilliantly in the final relay of the season. Here, the boys emerged with silver medals and the girls triumphant with gold. Well done to everyone who has taken part in cross country throughout the 2012 season, and a big thank you to Mrs Tapp for all her organisation and effort.

Juniors host Newcastle Schools Cross Country

Wednesday 17 October saw over 14 local primary schools descend upon Stubbs Field. We were very lucky with the weather as it remianed dry, with glimpses of sunshine! The girls race was as competitve as ever, with Grace Potts and Bella Goodwin battling their way to first and second positions respectively. Katie Vernon came a creditable 7th. With over 80 girls in the race, all of our team and guest runners performed incredibly well. For the boys, Oliver Knee once more excelled, coming 7th out of 93 runners. The rest of the boys' teams performed admirably, recording positions within the top two thirds of the race. A huge thanks to Mrs Tapp for all her organisation, and as ever, our very hard working groundstaff. We look forward to next week's final individual race at Churchfields.

Juniors race in their first cross country at Rode Hall

An extremely wet, muddy but beautiful setting at Rode Hall, was the scene for some very energetic and enthusiastic Junior School pupils. Two teams of boys and girls ran together in an exciting and varied course, organised by Terra Nova School. Fantastic performances all round, but Oliver Knee and Grace Potts's individual bronze medals were particularly outstanding achievements. Well done everyone.
